Master this One Thing and….

It may be hard to believe that as you master the ability to give genuine recognition to your employees that it would have such an impressive effect…and it does. Master this one thing and change your business.

Giving recognition for what an employee is contributing to your company and for their skills as it applies to their work sets up a positive change to your culture.  Even if there are things you really don’t appreciate about someone do your best to move to what is good about them.  Remember…whatever you focus on expands!

Why is it important? Employees want to know that they matter and that how they are doing their job really does make a difference. In giving recognition, you are giving EE’s what they want which contributes to their making a commitment to your company.

What should you talk about? Start by looking at what you really appreciate about this EE.  Here is where you must stop and make sure that whatever you share..it is genuine. Perhaps you appreciate how positive they are, their dependability, a particular skill they have that is really helpful to you, their willingness to go beyond when something is needed. If you look, you will find something. Let them know.

When should you give appreciation? You can set up reviews for a five minute check-in where you make your comments. Appraisals annually are a good place to give recognition and just stopping someone in the hall when a message comes to mind works too. The less formal your messages are, perhaps the more natural they become.

The results you experience from making recognition and appreciation an active part of your management style include: more receptivity to change, increased retention among employees, increased production, an improved work culture, more effective meetings and employees that make a commitment to their jobs by showing more interest and working to accomplish the goals and values of their company. Master this skill to improve your business.
